Little Money, Big Problems: Second Time Around

In my last post, I explained how consigning at Second Time Around works according to its website.

I set up an appointment for this past Tuesday so see if it's really as professional and painless as it says on it's site.

When walking into the store, I was greeted right away by an employee.

I told her I had an appointment and she had me fill out a form with information like my name, address, and phone number to begin setting up my account.

She was very kind and willing to explain the process to me once more just so I fully understood it.

I had a bag of 5 items (even though they said bring 3): a white purse, black BCBG flats, a multi-colored pair of floral shorts, a black and white floral skort, and a pair of grey Aldo flats.

After I finished filling every thing out, she took my bag off my hands and told me that she needed 20 minutes.

It was a small amount of time so I just browsed around until she came back.

In the end, she took 3 items: the floral shorts and two pairs of shoes.

Then she explained that the final prices for my items would be available for me online by the end of the day.

My shorts are priced at $15, the BCBG shoes are $25, and the Aldo shoes are $19.

If and when my items get purchased I will earn 40% of the profit and I could receive store credit or a check.

If my items don't get sold after 90 days, I can come back to the store and pick them up.

This was the easiest consignment selling experience I have ever had!

Little Money, Big Problems: The Second Time Around Prcoess

Have you been to Second Time Around (STA) on Newbury Street?

The Blizzard* aftermath is making getting there difficult, but it's on my to do list.

I figured since I haven’t been able to go I’d do some research and explain how Second Time Around (my next consignment stop) works according to the info on the store's website.

Second Time Around (STA) is a chain of upscale consignment stores that carries high-end and lightly-used clothes, according to the website and has 3 locations on Newbury Street in Boston.

STA has a seemingly better and more professional process for people who are looking to consign as selling your clothes in the store begins with an appointment.

Then, rather than lugging around a giant bag full of unwanted garments, STA asks for just a few pieces to start an account.

As for the pricing the website says, “items are generally priced at 30%-40% of their original retail value, depending on condition and style” and you can earn up to 50% of the in store sale price.

Compared to the Buffalo Exchange so far I think that’s a much better bet!

Oscar's 2013 Red Carpet Fashion

Monday, February 25, 2013

The Academy Awards was last night and I have a lot to cover!
2013 has been full of incredible fashion on the red carpet and the Oscar's did not disappoint!
The following are my 10 favorite looks of the evening:

Fan BingBing wearing Marchesa. She looks stunning in this fusha gown. The brightness of the dress is beautiful. I love the pop pf color. It looks amazing. Her hair is perfect. And I love the accents of her jewelry and lipstick that match the color of the dress. She honestly looks luminous. I love it!
Sandra Bullock wearing Elie Saab. She looks so classic and timeless in this black beaded dress. I love that it looks sheerness of it also. She's just incredible.
She wore blue velvet... Robin Roberts looking incredible in a Marc Bower dress. I love this dress so much. This is my dream dress. When I think of the song Blue Velvet this is the dress I envision. Truly stunning.
Charleze Theron looking white hot in Dior Haute Couture. Wow. I must say she looks amazing with short hair. Gosh. Her makeup looks so lovely. I love the peplum just over her hips and the deep V cut of her dress. The epitome of class.
Jessica Chastain wearing Armani Prive. She looks very old Hollywood which is what I love! So classic and beautiful. I just want to mention her Harry Winston bracelet from the 1960s...can i has? She really pulled it all together for the Oscar's. Beautiful.
Jennifer Aniston wearing Valentino. Oh my goodness! She looks radiant! Red is definitely her color. Her jewelry looks amazing too. Love the bag. She has never looked better.
Eddie Redmayne looking incredibly handsome wearing an Alexander McQueen tux. Classic.
Amy Adams looking in Oscar Delarenta. This light grey/blue dress looks amazing on her. Her makeup and accessories really accent the dress well. Simply flawless.
Joseph Gordon Levitt wearing Gucci and looking as handsome as ever. At one point he even showed off his socks. One had bicycles on them. He's the best.
Amanda Seyfried wearing Alexander McQueen. The details in this dress are amazing. So incredibly beautiful. She looked so flawless from her hair to her makeup. Amazing. This dress is truly lovely and she wears it so well.

Little Money, Big Problems: The Buffalo Exchange

Saturday, February 23, 2013

In Boston there are many ways to make cash without the pressure of finding a job.

Why not sell some of your unwanted clothes to a consignment store?

My mission is to find the best place to sell some clothes and make quick cash.

My first stop was at the Buffalo Exchange in Allston.

But at the Buffalo Exchange, the so-called “break the bank” deal came up short.

The sales associate checked each of my items, picked one dress out of the five pieces of clothing I brought, and told me that she’d give me either $2.50 cash or $4.75 store credit.

I felt gipped.

I paid a reasonable price for that dress, and it was in great condition.

My quick cash scheme turned into a bust.

In the end, I took the store credit… My quest will continue!

Editors’ Note: Little Money, Big Problems will be a weekly running column.

(This is an article I wrote for my college's blog. I'm writing a series of them about fashion and consignment stores in the local Boston area. Hope you enjoy them! Let me know what you think!)

Winter Gloom Brings Floral Bloom

Friday, February 22, 2013

TGIF!
Finally the never ending week is ending...well sort of.
Hope you've had a good week keeping busy and such!
This post is about how I adore floral prints.
I can't tell you how many floral printed pieces of clothing I own...
Winter always feels like it drags on and bringing in some floral prints always brightens up my day.
This peplum shirt is one of my favorite floral finds.
I paired it with my burgundy high waisted jeans to accent the red from my top.
I'm looking forward to this weekend!
There might be a chance of snow this Saturday and Sunday in Boston...and I'm just really hoping for a snow day...fingers crossed?

 Have a lovely Friday!

Winter...forever in a sweater

Thursday, February 21, 2013

For winter, sweaters are probably my favorite item of clothing. I have a decent amount but it never seems to be enough... I have a few selected places I enjoy purchasing them from, but you can never go wrong with a thrift shop. Salvation Army, Savers, and if you're a Boston local definitely check out the Garment District. I got the one I'm wearing at a Savers and I don't think I'll ever give it up. Sometimes it can be rare for me to find thrifted items that I actually like, but sweaters are something you can always count on.

Hope you have a lovely Thursday!

Roses are Red

Friday, February 15, 2013

I love roses. I'm glad I was able to use one as a prop for this post :) This is the outfit I wore on Valentine's Day! I kept my outfit pretty dark and I stuck to a red and black combination and accessorized with gold jewelry (my favorite combination).
Also I think the heart tights are my new favorite! I hope I can find more sweet tights like them!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!
